Obesity Definition. What causes Obesity? Time to lose Weight!

Everywhere there are health issues, but they may differ from one country to another in the prevalence. They differ from a person to another according to the lifestyle.

Obesity is a big health issue concerned a lot with lifestyle. It’s dependent upon the way you live, whether it’s right or not. In most cases, obesity is a significant hazard that often impairs health and gives rise to undesired consequences, such as Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus, and more… 

Obesity is known to be excessive or abnormal fats accumulation in the body for a long period of time. It is like a time bomb that will blow up at some time and you would never know when it is going to blow. Body mass index, BMI, is a simple index of weight-for-height commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults.

Obesity risk

It is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2). A person with a BMI of 30 or more, is considered an obese. A BMI equals to or more than 25, lies in the overweight range. The main cause of obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories ingested.

Globally, the high prevalence of obesity is due to:

  • Eating lots of energy-dense foods which are high in fat, salt, and sugar, but low in vitamins, minerals, and other micro-nutrients.
  • A decrease in physical activity due to the sedentary lifestyle, during work in particular. 

Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are good options for diminishing overweight and obesity. Overweight is one of the major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, and Cancer.

Childhood Obesity 

A very high rate of obesity among children can surely guarantee them to have obesity-related diabetes later on. Childhood Obesity causes liver, lung, heart and musculoskeletal complications as well as psychological ones. Lifestyle change is the most effective treatment, but the hardest to implement. As a result of higher childhood obesity rates, more and more adolescents are subjecting themselves to gastric banding.

Heart Diseases

Obese people have an increased incidence of heart diseases, and thus they are victims of heart diseases. They are liable to heart attack, congestive heart failure (CHF), sudden cardiac death, angina, and cardiac arrhythmia. Maintaining a healthy body mass index (BMI) can keep them safe.

Obesity often increases the risk of heart diseases because of its negative effect on blood lipid levels, which increase in obese patients. A high level of lipids increases the triglycerides level and decreases high-density lipoprotein, which is also known as HDL or good cholesterol.

People with an excessive amount of body fat have higher levels of triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol, as well as lower levels of HDL in blood. This is the optimal condition for developing heart diseases.


Blood pressure is the force by which the blood is pushed against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. Hypertension; high blood pressure, greatly raises your risk of heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure.

Being obese increases the risk of developing high blood pressure. In fact, blood pressure rises as body weight increases. Losing weight can lower blood pressure, specially for those who are overweight and already have hypertension.

Obesity in men has been associated with testosterone hormone abnormalities, sexual dysfunction, and infertility. In women without Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), obesity also causes reproductive problems.

Supportive environments and communities are fundamental in shaping people’s choices, making the healthier choice of foods and regular physical activity the easiest choice, and therefore preventing obesity.

Everyone should be having a sense of responsibility towards his own health, he should:

  1. Limit energy intake from total fats.
  2. Increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. 
  3. Limit the intake of sugars. 
  4. Commit to a regular physical activity.
  5. Achieve energy balance and a healthy weight.

The food industry can play a significant role in promoting healthy diets via:

  1. Reducing the fat, sugar, and salt content of processed foods.
  2. Ensuring healthy nutritious products.
  3. Practicing responsible marketing.
  4. Encouraging and supporting regular physical activity practice.
